Dumb Waiter - Is This Chocolate?
A fairly new fusion/math rock four-piece is in effect called Dumb Waiter. Comprising members of Street Pizza, Guise, The Jefferson Plane Crash, and The Jacob Spindel, Dumb Waiter has just released a masterful 7-track album. Tristan Brennis plays the saxophone, and he rocks out a la Skerik in Critters Buggin. Complicated rhythms and intense drumming (Nathaniel Roseberry) immediately stand out as key ingredients to this band’s potion. Sometimes half of the band will be furiously frenetic while the other half plays half-time downtempo, and it sounds perfect (“Rub-a-dub-dub-dub”). Brennis reaches into Morphine territories at this point.
The title of the album has happened to all of us at one point or another. You find something brown on a jacket or something and you’re like, is this chocolate? Please, lord, be chocolate. Only the most
stupid daring taste it before sniffing.
This record is for the adventurous, sure, but the timid will certainly find something to love as well. Even though the music is instrumental, the band switches things up so much that there is no way to get bored. Truth be told, this record is in the running already for our album of the year.
Come out to Dumb Waiter’s record release show tomorrow (5/2) @ Gallery 5 with Sea of Storms, Young Widows, and the former SnackTruck. 7 pm doors, 8 pm music, $10.
